Caterpillar I and II

Two featured pieces: two flash fiction stories, on the topic of caterpillars, by our new member Natalia Prats.

CATERPILLAR

The gentleman observed the passing caterpillar.  It was a beautiful bright green with tiny handsome spots along its sides.  The caterpillar moved faster than it seemed, and it soon was out of sight.
‘You’ve missed it,’ a nearby lady observed.  He smoothed his long white beard with his hand and shrugged.  ‘It doesn’t matter, I’m not in a hurry,’ he said.  He sat down on a toadstool to wait for the next free caterpillar to take him home, and while he adjusted his bright pointy hat he reflected on the fact that mushrooms were getting more uncomfortable with the years.

CATERPILLAR II

‘There! There is one!’
    ‘Hurry up!’
    ‘Don’t let it go away!’
The young men ran after their very surprised target, jumped on it and kept it still while they painted several dots on its sides with black paint.  A passing lady stopped to look, perplexed.  ‘What are you doing?’ she asked.
‘It’s a new thing,’ one of the teenagers said.  He didn’t even have a beard yet.  ‘It’s called caterpillarspotting.  We’ve done the most this week!’
The lady walked away, shaking her head.  The caterpillar did too, very much offended.  It couldn’t wait to the day it grew wings and didn’t have to put up with those bloody disrespectful gnomes.
